There are ways to deal with success and there are ways to deal with failure. Very real strategies are involved. Apple Computer continues to experience increasing sales and increasing record profits. Does Apple listen to the financial idiots telling them to change their game? No, at least not yet. But there are other entities who don’t understand that when you are on top and kicking ass you should not change what is working. Let’s look at a layman’s definition of insanity.
What is common is for someone to keep trying what isn’t working, doing the exact same thing over and over again, and hoping for a different result. Now whether this is insanity or stupidity is arguable; but honestly, after many repeated failures it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that a different approach is needed. On the street we say that trying the same thing over and over again and hoping for a different result is insane. We don’t watch the same Western over and over again to see if this time the “Indians” will finally win, do we?
I’m watching TV and seeing #9 seed Wichita State trouncing #2 seed Ohio State by 20 points with about seven and a half minutes left in the game. It’s always fun seeing the underdog winning a game. It is doubly fun to see the underdog kicking serious ass. We have to look at the insanity example backwards here. If what you are doing is wildly successful, don’t change what you are doing!
Seven and a half minutes is a very long time in a basketball game. What Wichita State did at this juncture was to stop doing what was working and stop trying to score and instead try to just hold the ball and eat up time. I’ve seen a team come back from twelve points down with a little over a minute to go. Once Ohio State knew Wichita State was no longer going to the basket, they no longer needed to defend the basket and could instead focus on trapping the ball and that’s exactly what they did.
Did Wichita State blow their very comfortable lead? Yes. Could Ohio State have won? Yes again. By virtue of a couple half court passes and quick scores, by breaking character and only because of that, Wichita State squeaked by with a four point win. They were lucky and their coach is an idiot at closing out an easy win.
Forgive me, but I’m from Detroit and the Lions pro football team at least used to be famous for getting a little lead and then going into a prevent defense which allows the other team to get short yardage while “preventing” a quick score. That is a losing strategy unless you are up by a lot and there is just a little time left. Insane.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If it isn’t working, do something different. Do not mix and match those. Is that so hard to understand? I forget the coach’s name, a really well known guy, once said, “The best way to kill time is to score another touchdown.” Now that’s a formula for success.
